Title: The Time Barrier
Connect our community to Jesus and each other!
Taking the Great Commandment Literally
Luke 10:27-28 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”
Theology of Place
Acts 17:26-27 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us.

Title: The Time Barrier
- View Session 2 Short Video: https://vimeo.com/117428368 (4 minutes) (Copy the link into your web browser and watch.) What are the priorities God would have for our time? What is the struggle we have as Americans with our busy schedules? How has busyness become a sickness or addiction? What will it take to make a change?
- Are there steps you have already taken to get to know your neighbors? If so, share your experiences with the group.
- Read Psalm 90:12. What is the psalmist asking us to do? How do we get a heart of wisdom when it comes to prioritizing and looking where our time is spent?
- Read Luke 10: 38-42. Do you associate more with Martha or Mary? Why? If you were going to defend Martha’s actions, what would you say? How was Martha a slave to chronos (the demands of the clock) and to the expectations of the world? How was Martha acting as the victim? How did Mary seize the moment, the kairos time (or a God-given opportunity) before her?
- The traditional role of women in that day was to be doing as Martha did. Mary had to be courageous to actually step out of the cultural mode and sit at the feet of Jesus as Rabbis. How might you have to break some cultural norms to develop a different value for the use of your time?
- Discuss the following three myths and how you see them impacting your life and relationships:
-
- Myth 1: Things will settle down someday.
- Myth 2: More will be enough.
- Myth 3: Everybody lives like this.
- Do you currently live at a pace that allows you to be present in your neighborhood? Are you interruptible?
- Imagine yourself having the time it takes to be a great neighbor. What would that look like for you and your neighborhood? What are some things you could say “no” to in order to make that a reality? How can you take responsibility for prioritizing your own life?
- Share one small next step that you feel God is calling you to take in the next seven days.
- Gather in smaller groups and pray for each other.
