Series: Contentment, Title: The Wisdom of Contentment
Key passages:
Proverbs 14:30 A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.
Ecclesiastes 4:4-6 – 4 Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless—like chasing the wind.5 “Fools fold their idle hands, leading them to ruin.”6 And yet,“Better to have one handful with quietness than two handfuls with hard work and chasing the wind.”
Who is Solomon?
How we battle the pressure of envy to gain a tranquil heart.
Don’t chase the wind!
Don’t sit passive!
Find your enough!
Ecclesiastes 4:7-8
Ecclesiastes 3:9-13
Family/Group Study Notes for August 1, 2021
Series: Contentment, Title: The Wisdom of Contentment
When are times when you feel less content? Why? What brings it on? What do you do about it?
Read Romans 8:28. What does it mean to be called according to God’s purpose? Do you know God’s purpose for your life? Share with the group. If not, how could you find out? Contentment lies in living according to God’s purpose.
Read Proverbs 14:30. What does this passage mean to you? What is the promise? What is the warning? How big is envy in our society? How is it destructive? How has it been destructive in your life?
Read Ecclesiastes 4:4-8. What wisdom do you glean from this passage? What does chasing the wind mean to you? Why does that end in frustration? What is the solution offered up here? What does working without purpose lead to? How can this passage be wisdom for your work and life?
Read Ecclesiastes 12:13-14. What does Solomon want us to remember when all is said and done? How is this good news? How can you become more focused on how God would have you live your life?
Gather with each other and pray for your contentment and the next steps to a tranquil heart.
