Series: Neighborliness, Title: Biblical Oneness
If you are stranded on a boat in the ocean with the following:
Male lawyer
Female Doctor
A Handicapped Child
Stay at home mom
A Garbageman
If one person had to be thrown overboard to save the rest – Who would you choose? And why?
What does the above statement say about human value? How do you think God would look at this exercise? What would it look like if we instead of trying to throw someone overboard to make room – we made the boat bigger? In Genesis it says humanity is created in the image of God. Read Matthew 22:34-40, what does this passage say about the lifeboat exercise?
When you hear the term “oneness” what do you think of? What about “biblical oneness”?
Read Revelation 7:9 Colossians 3:11, and Galatians 3:38-29 what do these passages say about oneness?
The author Wendell Berry says we need to get back to the idea of “membership” in community and life. That as Christians we are to reflect God’s original intention of being in the world together as members. What do you think membership vs being a lifeboat Christian looks like? What do you think is God’s call on us?
Read Matthew 22:34-40 – what does this passage say about biblical oneness? How can we celebrate our different backgrounds and be one at the same time? Is it possible? Why or why not?
Being in “Membership” will cost us, what do you think it will cost you? Why? Is it worth changing how we view life from a lifeboat mentality to a view of biblical oneness and membership?
What is God calling you to do during this time as we look at Neighborliness?
