Title: What is an offering?
An Alter is a place of worship
An offering is returning to God what is his as an act of worship
Genesis 8:20
1 Chronicles 21:1-28
Our offering costs us something, just not money but it costs us
something that we value….
There is a heavy cost – he can get something for free – but he realizes it wouldn’t be worth anything.
Ephesians 5:1-2, 1 Peter 1:18-19
Genesis 28:18-22 and 35:1-4,9-11
Proverbs 23:26, Matthew 6:19-21, Psalm 62:8, Hosea 6:6
David’s legacy was the temple that stood and still stands in a lot of ways. The temple that would lead to Christ and the fulfillment of the prophecy, David didn’t know that at this time… We don’t know the
legacy we will leave.
Build your “alter” with your rock – what will you offer?

What is an offering?
Study Questions
What to you is an alter? What does a church usually use an alter for? Are there other places that you have seen that use an alter? What is an
offering? What besides money can be an offering? What do you offer to God? Why? Does your offering cost you something? Why or Why not? Is the offering sacrificial?
What do you give to God? How do you decide what to give to God? What do you hold back from God? Why?
Read 1 Chronicles 21:1-28. How do you feel about the story in verse 1-17? It may seem unfair to us, but we must put ourselves in the place and time of the Old Testament, several thousands of years ago, and how it relates to King David and his people, his lack of character and his chosen
people’s disobedience. In verse 18-28, we see David’s attempt to make amends – building and alter for an offering. It costs him something. What does it cost him? Why didn’t he take the land for free? What did it cost David besides money? Would you have taken the land for free? Why or why not?
Read Ephesians 5:1-2 and 1 Peter 1:18-19. What was Jesus’ “offering” for us? Why does this matter? What are we supposed to do in
response to this? What is harder for you to offer: time, talent, treasure, your life, your heart, family, emotions, forgiveness, sin, etc.… Why?
Read Genesis 25:18-22 and Genesis 35:1-4,9-11. What is the
difference between these two scenes? How does Jacob seem to change? Do you offer God yourself and possessions if He will only do something for you? Do you do this unwittingly? How do you move from giving a portion to your whole life?
What does God want most as an offering from you? Read Proverbs 22:26, Matthew 6:19-21, Psalm 62:8 and Hosea 6:6. Why is your heart the most important? What flows from your heart?
What is the area of offering you need to grow the most in? Where are you going to place your stone alter in your house? What is your first step? What is it that you need to place at the alter that will cost you
something? What is your offering that will establish a legacy?
Pray with your family.
