Title: The Prayer of Our Hearts
The consistent rhythm of four disciplines produced a life-giving community of good will where generosity poured out, miracles were seen, people were saved, and the voice of God was heard in their lives and in the land.
Today’s focus: Jesus teaches us to pray so that our hearts align to the heart of God.
Hebrews 4:15-16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
John 14:12-14 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”
Jesus modeled prayer to set our hearts on fire to His way and His will.
Matthew 6:9-13 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

Title: The Prayer of Our Hearts
- Share with your family or group what prayer has meant in your life. When do you find yourself praying the most? Why? What for? How comfortable are you praying out loud with your family, friends, or others? Why/Why not? What steps could you take to grow your confidence in prayer?
- Read Hebrews 4:15-16. What are the promises in this passage? How does this give confidence to pray? What does God want us to know and to do?
- Read Ephesians 5:15-17 and Matthew 7:7-9. How do these passages relate to each other? What is Jesus saying in Mathew? What is Paul impressing on the Ephesian Church? How can prayer pull us into the wisdom and purpose of God so we might be more effective in our praying?
- Read Matthew 6:9-13. Start from the very first phrase of this prayer and discuss how your prayer life could align with this model. What would change in your prayers? What would you ask for in your prayers as you follow this prayer model? How does this prayer change your view of what it means to be forgiven and to forgive? How dependent are we on God delivering us from evil? What has it been like for you to try and defeat sin’s grip on your life by your own power?
- Gather with your family/friends and spend time praying out of the first phrase of the Lord’s Prayer “Our Father, holy is your name.” Spend time simply praising God for who He is.
