“FACETIME with Peter – From Defeat to Devoted”
John 21:15-19
Notes from FACETIME with Peter (John 21:15-19, ESV)
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
16 He said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he (Peter) said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

“FACETIME with Peter – from Defeat to Devoted”
1. Read John 21:1-14. This is the background for the “Facetime” encounter. What are the occurrences or details that stand out to you? Close your eyes and imagine the sounds and smells – share your thoughts and sensations with the others. How do these help you to understand Peter’s defeat?
2. Peter dives in and swims to shore ahead of the boat. What do you think motivated him to leave the boat, and go to Jesus? Hold onto these thoughts, until later on.
3. Jesus has a meal prepared for them – on a charcoal fire, some bread and fish. As they ate that meal together, what might have been memories that went through their minds? Jesus cared for them in their very real needs – food. How has Jesus cared for you, in your needs?
4. While eating, Jesus asked Peter a question three times (each time in a little different form). What do you notice about the differences in the questions that Jesus asks? What do you believe would be the significance of these changes to Peter? Thinking back to Jesus’ teachings – was Jesus careless or careful in his language? How did His words bring people to confront themselves and their need for His grace?
5. When Peter hears the question for the third time, he is grieved in his heart. What do you think was his posture? Earlier he had run to Jesus. Now, he was hurt, ashamed. Compare his motivation in these two moments. What is different between the two motivations? What is similar? How have you experienced these two motivations? What have you learned about God through the incidents in which you expressed these motivations? What have you learned about yourself?
6. In the end of the story, Peter was restored to a position and ministry among the apostles. But more than a task, he was restored to a relationship with Jesus Christ. Read 1 Peter 4:10. What is the priority – relationship or service? What is the connection between our relationship with Christ and our service for Christ?
