Title: We conquer by yielding
Our instinct as humans is to take matters into our own hands. Jesus, however, shows us that yielding to His way actually leads to a victorious life.
Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Psalms 37:11 But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.
Micah 6:8. He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Meekness implies obedience, not to man, but to God.
Psalm 37:9-11“For evildoers shall be cut off; but those who wait on the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; indeed, you will look carefully for his place, but it shall be no more. But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace”
Meek people realize their position before God and gladly live it out before their fellow humans.
Romans 12: 14-21 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” (will be ashamed of his actions) 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Family/Group Study Notes for week of May 1, 2022
Series: God Sense
Title: We conquer by yielding
- Read Matthew 5:5 and Psalms 37:11. What is shocking in these passages? How is this different from the world? What is God promising? How will this promise be true? Meekness is not weakness, what do you think God means by meekness?
- Read Romans 8:31-39. What are the promises in this passage? Why do you think Paul is addressing this for Christians who are feeling defeated? What makes us conquerors? Why do you think it is important to be meek before God? How does that give us an advantage in the world?
- Read 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. What is Paul struggling with in this passage? How does he make sense of His struggle? How would Paul be different if he was strong and capable in everything? When do you find you need Jesus the most? What would your life be like if you knew you needed Jesus in everything – every thought, decision and action? How is that like meekness spoken of in Matthew 5:5?
- Read Matthew 11:29. What is Jesus asking us to do? Why? How do you find yourself living out this command and promise? Where have you found struggle and an unpeaceful spirit because you have not?
- Read Romans 12: 14-21 Based on this Scripture, how can we as a church make a difference in this world? Explore each of these areas of daily life that Paul describes. How have you followed this example? What was your experience? How has Jesus shown up as you have lived this way? How did your connection with Jesus grow as you carried out these commands?
- Gather in smaller groups and pray for each other as you seek to live under God’s authority and commands in a world that wants you only to obey yourself.
