18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Series: Neighborliness, Title: The Spirit of Neighborliness
How has being a follower of Jesus made your life more inclusive of people from different races, backgrounds and cultural experiences? How has this changed from before you followed Jesus?
Read Luke 4:16-21. What does this first sermon of Jesus say about Him and His purpose? Of all the passages of Scripture Jesus could have chosen to read, why do you think He chose this one? What does it mean that this is fulfilled in His midst? The same Holy Spirit who moved Jesus to proclaim this passage is the same Holy Spirit that moves God’s people to follow Jesus. How does this passage become fulfilled in our midst?
Who do you see as captives in our society? Who do you see as oppressed in our society? What practical ways can you, your family, your community group help release captives? What would be your next action steps? How does this fulfill the great commandment to love God and love neighbor in Matthew 22: 26-39?
Gather with each other and pray for God to show you ways you can love your neighbor in helping them find freedom in Christ. Pray for each other to find personal freedom in ways the evil one has brought confusion and brokenness to your own life.
