Family/Group Study Notes for the Week of June 21, 2020
Series: Finding Strength
Title: The generational impact of a Godly Father
-
How has your father been influential in your life – good or bad? Was/Is he most influential through his words or actions? Explain.
-
If you did not have a father figure in your home growing up, how did others step in? What was that like?
-
Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9. What is the major theme that God wants us to take away from this passage? How would this passage apply to parenting? How does this passage apply if you are not a parent? What truths are still there?
-
In the same passage, how do you understand the “commands of God”? In the Old Testament with the Israelites these could mean the 613 laws of Moses. But how do we know what God expects of us today? How does Jesus and the New Testament apply to this question?
-
What does it mean as an individual or a family to “fear the Lord”? How does the proper understanding of this phrase inspire a person to desire to walk in His way?
-
One of the promises that comes out of living in the commands of God is a life that is good, multiplied and blessed. How is this broader than economic security? How would this apply to spiritual, emotional, relational health and success?
-
Verse 5 describes how to love God. What would this kind of love look like for you? How could you model this in your marriage, family, among friends?
-
In verses 6-9, why does the writer get into such detail about how to understand the commands? Where must the commands and promises of God be in our life before we can live them out? How could you make the commands and promises of God this clearly lived out in your life? If you were to re-write verses 7-9, what would you say today?
-
Gather in smaller groups and pray for each other that you may live rich and full lives with God.
