Old Baggage
8/4/19
Message Notes for August 4, 2019
Series: Baggage
Week 2: Old Baggage
John 8:31-36
Isaiah 43:16-21
My identity in Christ is baggage free!
You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free:
- Our baggage does not define us. Our identity is in God, through Jesus.
- Shame was never ours to carry. (Genesis 2:25)
- Grace is freely given, not earned! (Ephesians 2:8)
- God wants to do a new thing in our lives. (Isaiah 43:18-19)
So if the son sets you free, you will be free indeed!
- Jesus is our ultimate baggage handler.
How can we live into our identity in Christ and drop our baggage?
- Remove the labels and replace them with who God says you are!!
- Release your baggage and look forward… eyes on Jesus.
- Reframe our perspective and reject the tapes of lies that are stuck on replay. He is doing a NEW thing!!!
- Remember His power to defeat our enemies and make a way for us. Call on him! Ask His help!
- Resist picking our luggage back up. (John 8:31) (Repeat 1-4!)
- Rejoice in freedom in Him!
With Jesus, we can be free from the baggage we are carrying and the labels we are wearing that weigh us down and filter everything we see, hear, and how we respond!!
Family/Group Study Notes for the Week of August 4, 2019
Series: Baggage
Week 2: Old Baggage
My identity in Christ is baggage free!
- Who are you? After your name, how would you answer this? (How would you describe or introduce yourself to someone?)
- How often do you feel peace as you go about your day and in conversations with others around you? What experiences, mistakes, or words spoken to/about you keep you from living in peace and joy?
- What does God’s word say about you? Read Genesis 1:27. Ephesians 2:4-10.
- What does God’s word say about shame? Read Genesis 2:25, before the fall. Read Genesis 3:7, after. Notice their response? Read Hebrews 12:1-3. See what Jesus did?
- Read John 8:31-36. Jesus is talking with his believers. What does it mean to abide or remain in His word? How does that help us?
- Read Isaiah 43:16-19. What does God want to do? In whose power? What is our part?
- Reflect on how you are in bondage today. What does free indeed look like to you?
- Are there old words spoken to you that you continue to speak over yourself each day that drive your actions and reactions? Are they aligned with God’s word?
- How will you begin filling your heart and mind with His word and seeking Him, so when life presses in you can respond from a place of free indeed?
- Break into small groups and pray with one another for eyes to be opened and for courage to drop your baggage and the cross and walk in the freedom He gives.
