Title: Going Fishing!

Luke 5:1-11
On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Ephesians 3:20
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.

Title: Going Fishing!
Read Luke 5:1-11. What stands out for you in this passage? What is God revealing to you through this story? What does He want you to do? How would that impact your daily life if you did it?
Read Luke 4:38-39. What happened in this passage? Prior to Jesus coming on Simon’s boat, he had already witnessed Jesus perform a miracle. What do you think the difference was for Simon seeing his mother-in-law healed vs. the miraculous catch? Go back and ready Luke 5:7-8. What was Simon’s response to Jesus? Why was the response on the boat so difference from when Jesus was in his home? In what moments have you encountered Jesus in a brand-new way? How did you respond?
Read Luke 5:4-5. How do you think Simon was feeling in this moment? How do you tend to respond to those around you when you’re feeling tired, disappointed, reluctant, or annoyed? What can you learn from the way Simon responded to Jesus?
Read the following passages: 1 Kings 19:19-21; Genesis 6:11-22. How did Elisha respond to Elijah? How did Noah respond to God? How are their responses similar to Simon’s? Dig deeper into each of these Bible characters (Elisha, Noah, Peter). What was the fruit produced in their lives because of this initial “yes” to the call? How do you need to reorient your heart and mind today to be ready to respond with an “if you say so/thy will be done” attitude to God’s call?
What is your biggest takeaway from this study? What is your next step?
