Moments That MatterHannah: Humility and Prayerfulness
Your moment is coming. Be ready.
Ephesians 5:15-16 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
Hannah exhibits “open-handed prayer.”
1 Samuel 1:1-20, 1 Samuel 2:2-11.
Prayer is not the only thing we do, but it must be the first thing we do.
Instead of asking “Why me?” Consider asking “What next?”
A heart that is not humble will miss the moment every time.

Moments that Matter: Humility and Prayerfulness
- Read: Ephesians 5:15–16. Pastor Russell said that trials reveal whether we stand on “shifting situations” or on “a firm foundation.” In your own life, what’s an example of a trial that revealed where your foundation was? How can we prepare in “ordinary moments” for the extraordinary ones?
- Read: 1 Samuel 1:9–11 & Philippians 4:6–7. Hannah chose prayer over lashing out, self-pity, or revenge. Why do you think prayer often becomes our last resort instead of our first response? What practical steps can help make prayer our instinctive first action?
- Read: James 4:6–10. Hannah approached God as His “servant,” not as someone who deserved a blessing. How is humility in prayer different from praying with entitlement? Share a time when humility in prayer changed you before it changed your circumstances.
- Read: 1 Samuel 1:18 & Psalm 37:4–7. After praying, Hannah “went her way, ate, and her face was no longer sad.” What does this reveal about her faith? How can we find peace and even joy before we see God’s answer?
- Read: Ephesians 3:20–21. God’s answer to Hannah’s prayer was part of a much bigger plan for Israel. How might God’s answers to our prayers be intended for more than just our benefit? How can we pray with an open hand, ready for God’s larger purposes?
* Personal Application
This week, identify one prayer request in your life that requires both humility and surrender.
- Commit to praying over it daily with Hannah’s mindset: “I am Your servant.”
- Next week, share how this posture affected your trust in God.
